My grandfather’s truck rattled when it idled and smelled like motor oil and peppermint. Every fall, without fail, he would go out to my mother’s car and check that she had her own version of what he carried — a blanket, a light, water, cables. “A woman driving alone at night,” he’d say, “needs to be able to help herself.” Mama would thank him. ⚠️ Don’t dig your kit out of the trunk in traffic. This one is worth understanding, because it’s a spot that gets people killed. When you stand at the back of your car pulling gear out of the trunk, you are standing directly between oncoming traffic and your own bumper. If a distracted or drifting driver clips your car from behind, it gets shoved forward — and you are crushed between two tons of moving metal and your own vehicle. There is no walking that off. So keep your kit where you can reach it from the passenger side or the back seat, set up from there, and never put your body in that gap between the traffic and your bumper. And if the repair itself forces you back there — lowering a spare from under the rear, say — you do it only after every light and triangle is already out and drivers can plainly see you. 👶 A word about small children. Little ones wander — it’s what they do — and a roadside is the worst possible place for it. If there’s a second adult in the car, that adult has exactly one job: hold the children’s hands and keep them well off the road while you deal with the car. And if you’re alone with small kids, be honest with yourself: you cannot watch a toddler and fix a car at the same time. Don’t try. Pull as far off the road as you safely can, keep everyone buckled in their seats with the flashers on, and call for help and wait — safety experts agree you’re most protected staying belted inside the vehicle. A flat tire or a dead battery can wait for the tow truck. A child near a highway cannot.

It is one of the most hazardous places an ordinary civilian can stand — and after dark, more dangerous still. Here’s the part worth getting right: bright tape and a light aren’t rivals — they’re a day-and-night pair. - Three triangles behind you at about 10, 100, and 200 feet, toward oncoming traffic.

That’s six or seven separate “move over” signals, stacked one after another. The triangles throw his own headlights back at him; the strobes make their own light and grab the eye. Alternating the two is far louder than a row of either — and by the time he reaches you, he’s had every chance in the world to see you and give you room.
Being on the side of a road is one of the most dangerous things you will ever do as an ordinary civilian, so take every single opportunity to be seen. Get your vest and headlamp on before you’re exposed — while you’re still on the protected side of the car — and if it’s dark, wave your flashlight toward oncoming traffic to catch a driver’s eye as you move yourself around to the front of the vehicle, away from the traffic side. The cars going past are doing 60 miles an hour or more. That is no place to be casual or overconfident.
And this isn’t only for whoever’s doing the work. Every person who gets out of that car wears a vest — you, your spouse, your kids — even the ones standing on the far side, away from the road. A vest is eight dollars. A child is not. Don’t fuss over whether it fits a kid perfectly; just get it on them. For eight dollars a person, you protect everyone who’s out of that car.
The one that never got used — until, one February, it did. And here’s the thing Grandpa knew that most people don’t: it had to be wool, not the fuzzy fleece throw from the big-box store.
